why iron ore mining is important to minnesota
Flour, Lumber, and Iron In the late 1800s, important industries developed in our state. People found ways to profit from the state's natural resources, such as soil, water, timber, and minerals. Follow the stories of industrialists Charles Pillsbury (flour milling), Frederick Weyerhaeuser (lumber), and Henry Oliver (iron mining) to learn how these Minnesota industries developed.
The Iron Mining Association (IMA) of Minnesota promotes a healthy iron ore industry that will continue to benefit northeastern Minnesota as well as the entire state. It's an industry our communities, state and country depend on today and into the future.
Increasing iron ore demand, coupled with the depletion of high-grade hematite ores in the United States, after World War II led to development of lower-grade iron ore sources, principally the utilization of magnetite and taconite. Iron-ore mining methods vary by the type of ore being mined.
There is only one active nickel mine in the U.S., yet our country consumes 202,000 tons of nickel annually. Mining will provide more than $2 billion for the Minnesota Permanent School Trust Fund. Copper, nickel and precious-metals mining will create jobs for generations—possibly 100 years or more.
In the past, iron ore was mined on three iron ranges - the Cuyuna, Mesabi and Vermilion - and also in Fillmore County in southeastern Minnesota. Today, only the Mesabi Range still has iron ore/taconite mining taking place. Clay is mined in the Minnesota River Valley. Clay is used in making bricks, porcelain, tiles, and medicines.

"The Cuyuna iron range in east-central Minnesota is unique in the Lake Superior region because of its large manganiferous iron-ore resources. It consists of three areas--the Emily District, the North range, and the South range. Although much smaller than the Mesabi iron range to the north, the Cuyuna was a major producer of iron ore for 80 years.
Once iron mining began though, the mineral's magnetic character provided an unexpected risk for the mining industry. Ore ships on the Great Lakes could not rely on compasses to plot their position or course because of the magnetite they carried. Before the advent of global positioning satellites transporting iron ore was a riskier endeavor.
Currently magnetite iron ore is mined in Minnesota and Michigan in the U.S., and Eastern Canada mine taconite. Magnetite bearing banded iron formation is currently mined extensively in Brazil, which exports significant quantities to Asia, and there is a large and developing magnetite iron ore industry in Australia.
Because iron ore always has bands of other minerals intermingled in the deposit and the ore itself is made up of iron and non-iron minerals, the composition of the tailings varies considerably between mines and even over time within the same mine. In the Minnesota Iron Range, sulfur bearing rocks in the ia Formation and pyrite minerals

The district is located in northeast Minnesota, largely in Itasca and Saint Louis counties.
What is Iron Ore? Earth's most important iron ore deposits are found in sedimentary rocks. They formed from chemical reactions that combined iron and oxygen in marine and fresh waters. The two most important minerals in these deposits are iron oxides: hematite (Fe 2 O 3) and magnetite (Fe 3 O 4). These iron ores have been mined to produce ...
